Soho's Clothing

An independent online franchise for a successful alternative fashion chain, Soho's needed to combine eye-catching design with highly-optimised e-commerce functionality, and we launched this site with a bare-bones advertising budget in March 2006. Within six months the site was showing a return on advertising investment of over 500%, and within nine months it was appearing on the first page of Google for all its targeted keyphrases. The site receives more than 90% of traffic from search engines, 50% of which comes from its natural listings in Google. Day-to-day site updating and maintenance is carried out by the client, while I manage search engine marketing and design on an ongoing basis.

I designed and built this e-commerce site in just six weeks, and launched it in August 2006, again with a minimal advertising budget. Within six months the site was appearing in Google's top 10 for the highly competitive term 'large shoes', and now receives more than 95% of its traffic from search engines. Using Google Analytics I am able to continually monitor results from pay-per-click advertising as well as the success of various optimisation initiatives, to ensure the search marketing campaign delivers optimum performance and maximum ROI.

In 2001, this site was just a small offshoot venture for the company that organises the Biggin Hill Air Show. I added e-commerce functionality and took it through a number of redesigns that maximised its search engine opportunities to the point where today it competes successfully in a highly competitive niche, with first-page results for very many of its pages. Although I no longer handle the site maintenance due to its increasing technical complexity, it retains my original search-engine-friendly designs, and I continue to provide consulting support for Into the Blue in areas such as affiliate marketing, email marketing, statistical analysis and optimisation.

After building, launching and successfully marketing an extensive site for well-known local listings publication Families Magazine in 2000, three years later I was asked to undertake the migration of the site over to a new, highly complex and interactive architecture, which not only provided more efficient management and presentation of articles but also enabled client editing and updating of the site at different levels of access. A cautious, search-engine-aware approach meant that the site's excellent existing search engine rankings were unaffected, and search engine traffic has continued to grow since the migration. We are currently working on the next iteration, which will incorporate user feedback to develop a seamless, easy-to-use, interactive destination site equally attractive to advertisers and users.

SEC was appointed in April 1998 to improve search engine rankings and visitor traffic for this sponsorship research company based in the US. Careful optimisation and monitoring along with search-engine friendly design has led to the site consistently achieving top or top 5 positions in all major search engines for one or more of its selected keywords that have remained stable for more than 5 years, and visitor numbers continue to rise steadily despite increasing competition in the field.
